Ohio considers universal dental coverage

A universal healthcare bill introduced in the Ohio Legislature would guarantee all Ohioans dental coverage.

Modeled after Medicare, H.B. 159 sets up a statewide nonprofit agency to pay healthcare providers.

Money for the program would come from a combination of existing federal subsidies, a new payroll tax, a new business income tax, and a new individual income tax, which, according to the Wilmington News Journal, would start with earnings greater than $97,500.

The bill's co-author, Rep. Michael Skindell (D-Cleveland), said 91% of Ohioans would not experience a tax increase, and the new program would save money by consolidating administrative tasks and eliminating the sales and marketing costs in the current system of multiple private insurers.
