Trump nominates new surgeon general

U.S. President Donald Trump has nominated Jerome Adams, MD, MPH, as surgeon general.

Dr. Adams is an anesthesiologist and currently serves as Indiana state health commissioner. His previous roles include staff anesthesiologist and assistant professor of anesthesia at the Indiana University School of Medicine.

Dr. Adams is Trump's second healthcare nominee from Indiana, the home state of Vice President Mike Pence. His other Indiana appointee, Seema Verma, MPH, serves as the administrator of the U.S. Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services.

If confirmed as surgeon general by the U.S. Senate, Dr. Adams will lead the U.S. Public Health Service Commissioned Corps and serve as a public health spokesperson.
