To kick off its annual Root Canal Awareness Week (March 28 through April 3, 2010), the American Association of Endodontists (AAE) is paying tribute to the partnership that endodontists and dentists share in dental care.
According to an AAE survey of 983 general dentists, more than 94% said the most effective ways endodontists build relationships with them occur following a root canal procedure, when endodontists send reports and film back to the dentist and refer patients back to the dentist for restorative treatment.
Most dentists (92%) also want endodontists to accommodate emergencies, be available for second opinions (90%), and collaborate on a treatment plan for referred patients (86%).
The survey echoed prior studies that showed dentists value the services endodontists provide, the AAE said.
More than 85% of dentists said the work an endodontist performs is "worth the cost," while 35% believe they can do many of the same procedures as endodontists (and just as well) for less cost. The vast majority (93%) of dentists see endodontists as partners in delivering quality dental care, the AAE found.
