AAE issues revised trauma treatment guidelines

The American Association of Endodontists (AAE) released revised guidelines offering clinicians evidence-based direction for managing multiple types of traumatic dental injuries.

The AAE updated guidelines are available in the April 2026 issue of the Journal of Endodontics. The recommendations are designed to help dental professionals evaluate and manage trauma cases -- from fractures and luxation injuries to avulsed teeth -- with an emphasis on prompt diagnosis as critical to preserving injured teeth.

The revised guidelines incorporate elements from the International Association of Dental Traumatology's 2020 standards and reflect current clinical evidence, the AAE noted. Notable updates include:

The guidelines, the AAE said, serve as a clinical resource to support, not replace, practitioner judgment. While no treatment guarantees long-term retention of a traumatized tooth, timely intervention following recommended procedures can meaningfully improve outcomes, the AAE noted.
