TU Graz researchers developed a production method for germanium-based, light-cured fillings that they said is cheaper than conventional methods. The advantage of germanium-based resin is that it can be cured with non-UV light, the university noted. The production method also does not require sulfur.
Ivoclar Vivadent already has Ivocerin, a germanium-based photoinitiator in its product portfolio. While Ivocerin requires a complex, multistep process, the new method could streamline the process and prevent excess yield losses. As a result, dental fillings could be cheaper in the future, TU Graz said.
