Sirona Q2 revenues down 13%

CAD/CAM vendor Sirona Dental Systems reported a 13% drop in revenues in the second quarter of 2009 (end-March 31), due to the challenging economy, the company stated in a press release. Sirona earned $165.8 million, a decrease of $24.7 million compared to the same quarter last year. Net income for the quarter was $600,000, compared to $10.9 million a year ago.

"As expected, our second-quarter financial results declined year over year, due to the difficult economic environment," said Jost Fischer, chairman, president, and CEO, in the release. He also blamed costs associated with a program in which users of the company's Cerec CAD/CAM system were allowed to upgrade to its newest mill, the MC XL.

And while the company had gotten a favorable reception for its products at the International Dental Show in Germany in March, the timing of the conference this year made the company's performance look weaker compared to the same quarter last year, Fischer said.

Fischer remains optimistic, however, saying that the market for the company's latest version of its intraoral digital impressions system, the Cerec AC, has been strong and will remain strong because the company is about to launch an upgrade program. "Sales of our Teneo treatment center resulted in a solid start to our third quarter," he added.
