The Canadian Dental Hygienists Association (CDHA) has issued a statement about Canada's plan to provide direct, tax-free payments to cover dental visits for kids of qualifying families.

On September 13, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced that families earning $90,000 or less annually will receive funds to pay for dental visits for children under age 12, starting in December. This is for a two-year period, retroactive to October 1, 2022.

However, the specific services covered under the plan, as well as the specific oral healthcare providers who will be eligible to provide and be paid for services connected with the benefit, were not addressed, CDHA President Wendy Stewart said in a press release.

In the interim, CDHA supports timely help for people who need it and remains committed to working with the government and experts to ensure access to a range of oral health services and support, Stewart said.
