Ebony McBean, 42, was arrested and charged with one count of practicing medicine without a license and three felony counts of obtaining property by false pretenses. She was released after posting bond on February 14 but then failed to show up for a court hearing on February 16, according to the stories.

Clients allegedly spent thousands to get braces from her business, The Smiling Face Company in Raleigh, but then it abruptly closed. Clients who had already paid for services were left without refunds, as well as having to find a new clinician to complete their treatment, according to the stories.

Police began investigating McBean in November 2025 after several patients contacted the state dental board stating that they had paid for services or had received services from The Smiling Face Company but the business had closed.

Police had issued a warrant for her arrest in November, but authorities had not caught up with her until now.

A criminal complaint is merely an allegation. All defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
