A woman arrested in February for allegedly providing thousands of dollars in orthodontic services, including braces, to individuals in North Carolina without a license is now facing a new charge, according to multiple news stories.
Ebony McBean, 42, has been charged with an additional count of obtaining property by false pretenses for allegedly receiving about $3,000 from a patient for services she was not licensed to perform. She was released from custody after posting a $3,000 unsecured bond, according to the stories.

With the new charge, McBean faces four counts of obtaining property by false pretenses and one count of practicing medicine without a license.
In November 2025, police began investigating McBean after several patients contacted the state dental board complaining that they had paid for services or had received services from McBean’s business, The Smiling Face Company, but the business had closed.
Clients allegedly spent thousands to get braces from her business before it abruptly closed. Clients who had already paid for services were left without refunds, as well as having to find a new clinician to complete their treatment. Some of McBean's clients patronized her business after seeing her promotions on social media.
Police had issued a warrant for McBean's arrest in November, but authorities had not caught up with her until February.
A criminal complaint is merely an allegation. All defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
