A woman -- who is a licensed dentist in Peru but not the U.S. -- was arrested for allegedly running an illegal practice out of her home in Florida, according to a story recently published on NBC 6 South Florida.
Karim Cordova, 54, was charged on March 11 with practicing dentistry without a license, possession of a controlled substance, hazardous waste violation, and failure to track biomedical waste, according to the story. Cordova was booked into the county jail, and her bond was set at $7,800.
Authorities began investigating Cordova after receiving an anonymous tip that she was reportedly practicing dentistry out of her home in Miami. The state health department confirmed that Cordova and no other person at the home were licensed to practice dentistry.
Authorities made an appointment via text message to have Cordova extract a tooth. She allegedly quoted the investigator $150 for the procedure and provided her home address, according to the story.
On the day of the appointment, two undercover detectives went to Cordova's home for the scheduled consultation. Detectives found one of the bedrooms set up for dental procedures. Cordova was then taken into custody, according to the story.
