The ADA's Code Maintenance Committee has approved 67 updates to the Current Dental Terminology (CDT) 2027 code set. The changes include 28 new codes, 33 revisions, and six editorial changes.
The updates take effect January 1, 2027.
The committee met in March at the ADA's headquarters in Chicago. Among the notable additions are new codes covering:
- Healing cap placement
- The removal of screw-retained implant restorations
- The repair or removal of fixed splints and implant- and abutment-retained interim fixed dentures for partially edentulous arches
A revision to code D2390 expands the use of direct resin-based composite crowns to both anterior and posterior teeth, removing the previous anterior-only restriction.
The update also introduces codes for orofacial pain management, including injection blocks for the occipital nerve, peripheral nerve, and sphenopalatine ganglion, as well as tendon, ligament, and trigger-point muscle injections. Revisions to the neuromodulator administration code and new codes distinguishing cosmetic from therapeutic chemodenervation procedures are included too.
CDT 2027 will be available in the fall. Clinicians and other stakeholders who wish to submit code change requests for CDT 2028 must do so by November 1, 2026, the ADA said.
