"You know, there are three kinds of health in life: spiritual health, physical health, and mental health. And in dentistry, the area of mental health has always been an important thing to pay attention to.
"Oftentimes, we refer to burnout as one of the things that will affect probably every clinician if they practice long enough.
"What is burnout? Burnout is just you've totally lost your motivation, your zest, your zeal for doing dentistry day in and day out.
"How can you combat this? Start by adjusting your appointment times. If you can make your appointments a little longer or see fewer patients in a day, that's one way which you can take a little pressure off your shoulders. Second, adjust your workdays. If you can work a shorter day or take a few extra days off, that can go a long way at recharging your batteries and starting to turn you around.
"However, if you can't do either of those things, it's imperative you find a colleague or a professional to talk to. Don't suffer through burnout alone, and don't think it's just going to go away on its own. It's going to take a little action on your part, but it can go away, and you can learn to love dentistry all over again.
"Now, let's get back to work."
