Dr. Tom Giacobbi on expenses and your dental team

Dental teams often don't realize how much it costs to keep a practice stocked and running. That disconnect can lead to waste, over-ordering, and frustration on both sides.

In this quick video tip from Dr. Tom Giacobbi, he shares two simple, hands-on ways to help your team appreciate the true cost of running a dental practice, from a "Price Is Right"-style guessing game to a revealing look at what's expired in the drawers.

"Next time you're in the office, ask your dentist if their wallet is full or empty. Most of them will say, "Oh, my wallet's empty." That's because most dentists are cheap.

"But why are they cheap? Because it's expensive to run a dental practice, and a lot of team members don't fully understand how expensive it is.

"One way dentists can get their team members on board with that concept is to have a fun game of 'Price Is Right.' See how well they are at guessing how expensive some of the things you use in the practice every day really are.

"The next is when you're spring cleaning the practice. Take a look at how many things you find in the drawers and the cabinets and the operatories that have gone expired and can no longer be used. Put that in a big pile in the corner so that everybody can appreciate the proper use of supplies and materials so that we're not over-ordering or letting things disappear in a corner where they won't get used in time before they expire.

"Take this message back to your team, and you'll all be on the same page with being responsible with resources. Now, let's get back to work."
