More patients turning to endodontists for complex dental care

New data from the American Association of Endodontists (AAE) shows that more patients are turning to endodontists to relieve tooth pain and preserve their natural teeth through root canal therapy.

Insurance claims from 2020 to 2024 revealed a steady rise in the number of patients seeking endodontic specialists for these procedures. Over the four-year period, endodontists’ share of endodontic treatments grew by 9.8%, rising from 34.6% in 2020 to 44.4% in 2024.

Similarly, the percentage of patients receiving care from endodontists increased by 9%, from 36% in 2020 to 45% in 2024. This trend suggests growing trust in the expertise of endodontists and greater awareness of the benefits of root canal therapy.

Complementing these findings, an AAE U.S. survey conducted earlier this year found that 94% of adults value keeping their natural teeth for as long as possible. Despite fears about root canal procedures, many patients report positive outcomes.

Additionally, 45% of adults say they’ve had a root canal, and 71% of those patients are glad they chose a root canal over a tooth extraction. Together, the data highlight both increasing confidence in endodontic care and a strong commitment among patients.
