During the pilot program, dental professionals will screen the general public for oral cancer using LED Dental's VELscope Vx oral assessment system. The screenings have been endorsed by the British Columbia Oral Cancer Prevention Program and will take place at 12 London Drug pharmacies in the province.
"This is the first time we are working with colleagues outside the dental field to find ways to combat the minimally known, but deadly, oral cancer," said Samson Ng, DMD, who helped develop the program.
The screenings will be free for patients during the pilot program and offered at no or little cost to patients after the initial program finishes April 17. Dental professionals will document any areas needing follow-up on a form for patients to take to their dentist or healthcare provider.
