A dental office manager who oversaw his wife’s practice in Ohio was sentenced for allegedly not paying more than $760,00 in U.S. taxes and filing false tax returns, according to multiple news stories.
Eric Moesle, who pleaded guilty in August 2024 to failing to pay U.S. income taxes, was sentenced on April 17 to six months in prison for allegedly failing to pay taxes to the IRS that were withheld from employees who worked at Elemental Dental in Johnstown, OH. Also, court documents list New Leaf Dental as another name for the dental practice, according to the stories.
Additionally, Moesle was sentenced to six months of house arrest and three years of supervised release and ordered to pay $773,062 in restitution. Moesle must surrender to prison on or before August 1, according to the stories.
Between 2014 and 2020, Moesle, who was the office manager for bookkeeping, payroll, and administrative efforts, allegedly withheld Social Security, Medicare, and income taxes from Elemental Dental employees but did not pay them to the IRS. Moesle reportedly didn’t pay the dental practice’s share of those taxes, which totaled $760,255, to the IRS during that time.
Furthermore, he allegedly failed to pay withheld wages into some employees’ retirement accounts. Additionally, Moesle allegedly laid off employees during the pandemic, but they were ineligible for unemployment benefits because there was no record of them paying taxes. Several employees claimed that they were notified that their health insurance was canceled for lack of payment, according to the stories.
Moesle reportedly used the collected taxes to pay for personal expenses, including travel, tennis lessons, and college tuition.
