Researchers at the University of Nottingham have developed a fluoride-free gel designed to regrow damaged tooth enamel, according to a study published in Nature Communications. The gel uses proteins that mimic those involved in enamel formation during infancy, filling microscopic cracks and drawing calcium and phosphate from saliva to build a new mineral layer with properties similar to natural enamel.
Laboratory testing that simulated brushing, chewing, and acid exposure showed the regenerated enamel performed similarly to healthy enamel, the researchers said. The material may also help patients with exposed dentin, a condition that can cause tooth sensitivity.
The university's spinout company, Mintech-Bio, is working toward a first commercial product, which the researchers hope to introduce as early as next year. Clinicians could apply the gel chairside, using a process similar to current fluoride treatments, according to the researchers.
