The ADA is throwing its support behind the Department of Veteran Affairs (VA) pilot program, which promises to improve access to dental healthcare services.

In a December 14 letter to President-elect Joe Biden and Vice President-elect Kamala Harris, ADA President Dr. Daniel Klemmedson and Executive Director Dr. Kathleen O'Loughlin voiced their support for expanding dental healthcare access for veterans. Currently, only about 8% of veterans are insured for dental healthcare services through the VA healthcare system, the ADA noted.

The ADA is calling for federal authorization of administrative support services in VA medical centers to help veterans identify dental services offered at federally qualified health centers, not-for-profit dental facilities, and volunteer dental professionals, Klemmedson and O'Loughlin wrote.
