Dr. Tom Giacobbi on dentistry's x-ray advances

Ready for a blast from the past? Dr. Tom Giacobbi takes a trip back to the 1980s to show you just how far dental x-rays have come, not only in his career, but in dentistry overall.

Video transcript

"You might find this hard to believe, but at the beginning of my dental career, we were still taking dental x-rays with film, and this was a painful process, both for the patient and the clinician.

"It was this sharp-edged piece of plastic and cardboard that went into their mouth. You hit them with high-exposure radiation. You took that into a dark room, opened the envelope, fed it into a processor, and maybe five or six minutes later, you knew if you got a good image.

"Nowadays, like everything in this world, it's instant, including our x-rays. Digital x-rays have given us better images, less radiation, and an easier ability to share images with others.

"When you're taking x-rays today, say a quiet 'thank you' to your digital x-ray sensor. Now let's get back to work."
