A retired dentist in California was arrested on May 27 for allegedly fatally shooting a 58-year-old man he lured outside by setting fire to his car, according to multiple news reports published on May 28.

Dr. Philippe Chagniot, 68, who practiced in the state between 1985 and 2024, was charged with murder for the May 17 killing of his tenant, Eric Bigone. Chagniot allegedly used a silenced automatic firearm to murder Bigone outside a San Francisco home owned by a family member of Chagniot, according to the stories. Police confirmed that Chagniot was Bigone's landlord, according to one news article.

Additionally, Chagniot, who is being held in the local jail, has been charged with assault with a firearm and possession of a silencer. If convicted, he could face life in prison.

On May 17, authorities claim that Chagniot set fire to the top of Bigone’s vehicle and waited for him to come outside. Once Bigone was outside, Chagniot allegedly came up behind Bigone and shot him in the back with a silenced weapon, according to the stories.

Then Chagniot reportedly stood over Bigone, firing more shots until he was dead. Bigone was discovered at around 5 a.m., according to news stories.

Surveillance video shows Chagniot wearing dark clothing and biking up to Bigone’s residence on the morning of the murder. Also, video allegedly shows Chagniot using spray paint to cover surveillance cameras in the area.

When he was arrested, authorities claim they recovered evidence that connects Chagniot to the case, according to the stories. Authorities have not provided any details regarding a possible motive.

A criminal complaint is merely an allegation. All defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
