A former employee was arrested for allegedly embezzling more than $78,000 over a three-year period from a dental practice in Connecticut where she once worked, according to multiple news stories published on June 21.

Barbara Economovich, 29, of Trumbull, CT, was charged with burglary, larceny, and computer crime. She remains free after posting a $75,000 bail bond.

In October 2025, Economovich’s former employer, Southport Family Dental in Fairfield, CT, contacted police after the office manager discovered suspicious financial activity that occurred while the business was closed for a month. Three credit card refunds totaling more than $1,100 were manually processed, according to the stories.

A review of the practice’s surveillance footage showed Economovich, who stopped working at the office in August 2025, entering the building after hours.

When interviewed by police, Economovich claimed that she visited the office after hours weekly to get a new tray for her clear aligners. She alleged that she went during those times due to her schedule and that she would enter using a key that was hidden in a janitor’s closet. Economovich did not have permission to use the key, according to the stories.

When asked if she logged into the practice’s computer during these visits, Economovich claimed she did not remember.

The owners of the practice told authorities that Economovich had been given all of her clear aligner trays months earlier.

An internal review of the practice’s finances revealed more than $90,000 in discrepancies that occurred between 2022 and 2025. However, Economovich did not have access to the office’s financial system until 2023.

Furthermore, it was discovered that more than 300 unauthorized refund transactions, totaling $78,000, were made from the practice to credit cards belonging to Economovich.

After she left the job, Economovich reportedly sent a text to the practice owners. In the text, she apologized for her actions and begged them to allow her to repay the money she had stolen, according to the stories.

A criminal complaint is merely an allegation. All defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
