The number of dentists experiencing decreases in insurance reimbursements from the companies in which they participate is higher than ever before. Additionally, dentists need to realize that even if insurance companies do not increase reimbursements, the impact of current inflation is the same result as a net decrease in reimbursements.

Identify any plans where reimbursements are too low. Contact those insurance companies and let them know that you are ready to leave if they do not improve your reimbursements. In many cases, they will increase the reimbursements to retain your practice as a participating office.

Don’t be afraid to appeal rejected cases. Sometimes there is an administrative person at the insurance company deciding that the case submitted does not qualify. With an appeal process, it will be reviewed further by more clinically focused individuals and potentially approved.
