From silver to simplicity: Dr. Tom Giacobbi looks at dentistry's composite revolution

Sometimes it's easy to forget just how far dental materials have come, but Dr. Tom Giacobbi is here today with a quick reminder of the advances that have been made in dentistry.

"Oh, boy. I remember when that ugly filling came through the door.

"You know, the evolution of filling materials is really quite interesting. In the early days of dentistry, of course, we started with amalgam, which was ugly and silver and gray, but it was durable, and it worked.

"The needs of our patients evolved, and tooth-colored filling materials came on the scene, but they didn't come easy at first. They required many steps, and, obviously, they weren't all that beautiful either. So you would dry and you would etch and you would bond and prime, and the list goes on.

"Now we're in the era of simplified composites. I would say they're still not perfect, still not easy, but we have bulk fill, we have single-shade composite, and we have single-bottle bonding systems.

"The bottom line is, it's important to know where we've come from, to see how far we've come, and I'm so excited to see what comes next.

"Now, let's get back to work."
