Do’s and don’ts for using dental insurance to your advantage

Based on our observation, about 90% of dental practices participate in one or more dental insurance plans. Therefore, most practices -- even those that don’t participate with insurance -- are overlooking a great opportunity to increase practice production.

Practice Success Do

Reach out to patients who will lose their insurance benefits at the end of the year. Develop an outreach program that targets patients with incomplete treatment and remaining dental insurance benefits. The goal of the program is to let these patients know that they have a certain amount of remaining benefits that they are entitled to and that those benefits can be put toward the treatment they have yet to complete. This process often increases practice revenue by $60,000 or more in an average dental practice.

Practice Success Dont

Don’t forget to keep track of patients with renewed benefits and incomplete treatment. Each January, practices should have a program to contact all patients who refused to complete treatment in the previous year due to having used all their insurance benefits.
