NYU Dentistry to expand care center for kids with disabilities

The New York University (NYU) College of Dentistry was awarded a nearly $5.5 million grant to expand the NYU Dentistry Oral Health Center for People with Disabilities.

The grant, which was funded by the state and the New York State Office for People With Developmental Disabilities, will be used to create eight private treatment rooms for pediatric patients with disabilities on NYU Dentistry’s ninth floor. The expansion will nearly double the number of rooms dedicated to people with disabilities, from nine to 17, and will triple the estimated capacity for pediatric patients with disabilities.

The new treatment rooms are designed to be larger than those in traditional dental offices. Additionally, the renovation will include a disability-friendly waiting room, an immersive multisensory room, and a consultation room for services, including social work, nursing, and nutrition, as well as virtual visits with new patients to acclimate them to the experience of seeing the dentist before their first appointments.

Construction is estimated to be completed in 2027.
