"Hi, I'm Dr. Chris Campbell. I'm a general dentist in Columbia, SC, and one of my favorite clinical tips is to get back in the lab. Do a little bit of lab work, specifically in cases like adolescents or children with traumas, large class IVs, or cases where it's difficult to do something clinically in the mouth without doing a little prep work in the lab to achieve proper contours, proper contacts, and the shape of our restorations.
"I think a lot of times we get really focused in dentistry, and we want to pick up the handpiece. When we want to start prepping, we want to start fixing, and I've noticed a lot of times, particularly with traumas, where kids might be upset.
"They might be crying, the parents are upset. A lot of times in our office, we'll just take a quick impression or a quick digital scan. Now I'll go back in the lab and, believe it or not, actually pull out my waxer and add a little bit of wax to these models to create putties. And that way, we can take that perfectly contoured tooth that we've achieved in the lab and bring that into the clinical setting. And a lot of times, that just makes that procedure so much more efficient.
"So, a little bit more time on the front end, but I think it makes us a lot more efficient on the back end."
