"What do the words 'separation,' 'adaptation,' and 'support' have in common? They're all things a parent thinks about when they send their kid off to college for the first time.

"Actually, we're going to talk about matrix bands. These are the handy little devices we use to keep the filling material inside the cap. When you pair two more things with them, on goes the matrix band, in goes the wedge to provide initial separation, and then on goes some kind of a ring to help keep that matrix band tightly adapted to the tooth, to reduce flash, ease finishing, and overall, provide a great contact.

"There's nothing more satisfying at the end of a class II filling than to feel that great contact with the floss. You know what I'm saying?

"Now let's get back to work."
