The Epic Hygiene laser from Biolase meets guidelines from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), which recommends banning the use of ultrasonic scalers to minimize the risk of COVID-19.
Biolase's laser allows hygienists to perform treatments for bacterial reduction and managing periodontal disease without using water. Traditional scalers create a visible water spray that may contain water, saliva, blood, and microorganisms that can help spread the virus.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration cleared the product for laser bacterial reduction therapy in March.
