"There's nothing more intimidating for a team member or a patient than picking a shade.

"If you've ever remodeled your house, you know how difficult it can be to find just the right shade of gray, or in this case, tooth.

"When you're taking shades on your patients, the most important things are to take the shade at the beginning of the appointment. Make sure that the light source is a good light source -- natural light, obviously being the best -- or color-corrected light, the second best.

"Finally, make sure you take a photo of the shade tab against the patient's tooth. Oftentimes, you'll see nuance in the photo that you didn't see with the naked eye.

"Be sure that your patients are involved in this process, even if it's a matter of showing them the last two shades that you were looking at so that they can give some input. Once they've got some buy-in, they'll be much more confident in how the result looks.

"Now let's get back to work."
