Dr. Tom Giacobbi on the benefits of cheek retractors

Sure, they may make the dental patient talk funny, but there's no better tool for getting an unobstructed view of the mouth than a cheek retractor, says Dr. Tom Giacobbi.

"Let's take a minute to talk about cheek retractors.

"These are like an extra set of hands in the operatory. It gives you the chance to do, say, anterior composites without your dental assistant's hand sitting in the light, holding up the lip. It also can be helpful for patients that can't hold their mouth open for long periods of time, or when you're doing extensive dentistry.

"Find a type and brand and size that works well for you, and use it in your practice.

"Now let's get back to work."
